Why the Left Behind Children? Who are they?
Enoch learned about the Left Behind Children during his college years at the University of Hong Kong, and was deeply moved by the desperate needs of these children. After graduation, he spent 2 years living in a rural area in China as a volunteer to a charitable organization that helps the LBC.
"Left-behind children" (liushou ertong) in China are millions of children who remain in rural villages while their parents migrate to major cities for work. Estimated to number over 60 million individuals—roughly one-fifth of China's total child population—this group is primarily raised by grandparents, extended relatives, or left completely unsupervised. The phenomenon is largely driven by China's restrictive hukou (household registration) system, which bars rural children from accessing subsidized education, healthcare, and welfare programs in urban centers. Consequently, these children face unique economic, social, and emotional hardships, including significantly higher rates of depression, anxiety, developmental setbacks, and school dropout rates compared to their urban peers.
